Recorded in Los Angeles, ‘Hippopotamus’ sees them take the pop form, shake it up, and create an album that is adventurous, fresh and idiosyncratically ‘Sparks’. The Alarm

The Alarm was founded in Wales, and by the time of 1981's debut single 'Unsafe Building',
featured a daring mix of amped-up acoustic guitars, harmonica and passionate vocals that invited the enduring description “Bob Dylan meets The Clash”.

This is the sound of The Alarm that has been heard around the world ever since, with 17 Top 50 UK singles, a host of successful albums and over 5 million sales worldwide.

JP Cooper

Manchester’s JP Cooper is a self-made, self-taught musician who manages to exist effortlessly within two scenes generally considered to be at varying ends of the sonic spectrum. Learning his craft on the Indie Rock scene, but later connecting with the Manchester Sing Out Gospel Choir, John Paul Cooper’s exquisite vocal seamlessly encompasses the best of both worlds.

Public Service Broadcasting + Palace

After two years up in the stratosphere with the hugely successful ‘The Race For Space’, Public Service Broadcasting are returning to earth.  J. Willgoose, Esq., now has an established reputation for weaving forensic, historical research into evocative storytelling. This time he is taking us on a journey down the mine shafts of the South Wales valleys and using the history of coal mining to shine a light on the disenfranchised.

The band’s first release through independent label Play It Again Sam, Every Valley examines the history of coal mining in South Wales. It is a record about community and what happens to an area when its lifeblood is ripped from it and as much as anything, it is a metaphor for a much larger, global and social malaise.

Starsailor

An indie rock quartet whose debut single, "Fever," earned them the title of "Britain's best new band" in February 2001, Starsailor continue the rich lineage of Travis, Coldplay, and other anthemic pop/rock bands.

Formed in Wigan by music students James Walsh (vocals/guitar), James Stelfox (bass), and Ben Byrne (drums), the band went through several guitar-heavy embryonic lineups before the arrival of keyboardist Barry Westhead (keyboards) cemented its sound.

Their fifth studio album – and first since 2009 – All This Life finds Starsailor re-energised and on outstanding form. They played to an ecstatic crowd in a packed Big Top Stage at this year’s Isle Of Wight Festival and debuted a new track from the forthcoming album.

The Fall + Trudy & The Romance + Blood Sport

The Fall formed in Manchester in 1976 and has existed ever since. Essentially built around its founder and only constant member, Mark E. Smith.
The group's music has gone through several stylistic changes over the years, but is often characterised by an abrasive guitar‐driven sound and frequent use of repetition, always underpinned by Smith's distinctive vocals and often cryptic lyrics.

Support comes from Trudy and the Romance. These boys will leave you love drunk and weeping into your whiskey. With Hollywood-tinged melodies and raucous guitar, they spit grit in the teeth of a Colgate grin.

Also on the bill, Blood Sport.Their blistering guitar dynamics and pointed-yet-pointillist lyrics meshing into rough-house, techno-gilded polyrhythms, with an untrammelled urgency pervading their tightly wound sound and all that surrounds and informs it.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Godspeed You! Black Emperor began with Efrim, Mauro and Moya in the early 90s, playing a handful of shows and recording a self-released cassette as a trio before deciding to transform the group into a large band. Recruiting numerous Montreal musicians through 1995-1996, GYBE mounted sense-rattling wall-of-sound performances, featuring as many as 14 musicians and several 16mm film projectors, before recording their debut vinyl-only Constellation album in 1997. They transformed a warehouse space into the Hotel2Tango, a DIY hive of activity with band rehearsal rooms, silkscreen and wood shops, and weekend shows that took place under the radar. The group settled into a permanent nine-member line-up by late 1998, with Aidan and Bruce on drums, Thierry and Mauro on basses, Efrim, Dave and Roger on guitars, and Norsola and Sophie on cello and violin respectively. The band toured and recorded incessantly from 1998-2002 and gained a reputation for mesmerising live shows marked by orchestral dynamics, epic rock power and clunky, beautiful film loops. After four records, GYBE announced an indefinite hiatus in 2003.

The hiatus ended in December 2010, when the band returned to curate and perform at All Tomorrow’s Parties in the UK, followed by extensive international touring. October 2012 saw the release of 'ALLELUJAH! DON'T BEND! ASCEND!, their first recorded work in a decade, to widespread critical acclaim including; with thy follow-up, Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress released in March 2015.

Blancmange

7:00 pm19:00

Blancmange

"Probably the most under-rated electronic act of all time." Moby

British electronic band Blancmange first broke through in the early 80s with their mix of synthesizers and surrealism, fused in groundbreaking singles such as 'Feel Me', 'Living On The Ceiling', 'Blind Vision' and 'Don't Tell Me'. The epic synthpop of 'Waves' and a witty cover of Abba's 'The Day Before You Came' illustrated a band who were always willing to change and adapt new styles within their electronic framework.

After working on their own projects and film music, they returned in 2011 to great acclaim with their fourth studio release, "Blanc Burn". The "Semi Detached" album followed in 2015 and Blancmange’s first ever instrumental album, "Nil By Mouth"  and "Commuter 23" arrived in 2016.

The inspiration continues with Blancmange's new album "Unfurnished Rooms", out on 22 September 2017. Song-based but with experimental twists in the arrangements, it's their most forward looking work so far. As Mojo magazine recently commented on the band: 'Music Pop Art has seldom been as good.’

The Tubes

After opening up for Led Zeppelin, Iggy Pop & the New York Dolls in the early 1970's, San Francisco Rock Band The Tubes, released their debut album in 1975 on A & M Records. This included the hit single "White Punks on Dope" which went on to be covered by both Nina Hagen and Motley Crue and other classics such as "Mondo Bondage" & "What do you want from Life?".

The Tubes were renown for their theatrical live shows, which at their height featured dozens of extras including Acrobats and Tap Dancers. The band released three more albums on A & M before leaving in 1982 and releasing their most successful album to date "The Completion Backwards Principle" which contained the hits "Don't want to wait anymore", "Sushi Girl" and "Talk to you later". In 1983 they followed this up with their most well known song "She's a beauty" which went Top 10 in the USA charts.

65daysofstatic

65daysofstatic are a noisy instrumental band formed in Sheffield in 2001. They have released six albums and numerous EPs and singles, developing a sound that is as compelling as it is divisive. Once intent on taking over the world with noise, they now content themselves with taking it over one room of people at a time.

Their music has taken them from the club circuits of Northern Europe to the arenas and dive bars of America; warehouses on the edge of Siberia to airstrips, jungles and all-nighters in the Far East and Australia.

Jah Wobble & the Invaders of the Heart

Jah Wobble & the Invaders of the Heart

Over the past three decades or so, Jah Wobble has ploughed his own furrow as a prolific solo artist, as well as becoming a well-respected session musician, with a genuine passion for Eastern and Global music. He has worked with a diverse range of musicians, including Baaba Maal, Bjork, Primal Scream, Brian Eno, Sinead O’Connor, Julianne Regan, Dolores O’Riordan, Holgat Czukay, The Edge and Chaka Demus & Pliers.

The man born John Wardle began his musical journey when he met John Lydon and Sid Vicious in 1973. It was Vicious who not only nicknamed John ‘Jah Wobble’ after a drunken binge but also loaned him his first bass guitar. Lydon asked JW to join Public Image Limited (aka PiL) in spring 1978. Wardle’s distinctive ‘low end’ bass became the backbone of PiL’s pioneering sound. After its follow-up, the exploratory yet sinister soundscapes of 'Metal Box', Wardle became disillusioned by politics within the band and their reluctance to play live. He eventually split from PiL in mid-1980 and embarked on a prolific solo career.

Jah Wobble and the Invaders of the Heart released their debut album in 1990 and received a Mercury Music Prize nomination in 1991 for the 'Rising above bedlam' album. After the acclaimed 'Take me to God' album in 1994 the band split and Jah Wobble launched his own 30 Hertz record label which has subsequently released around 30 albums.

Over the last three LPs New Zealanders Fat Freddy's Drop have navigated their way from the incubator of sunshine reggae through a colour-saturated field of soul psychedelia before swerving onto a desolate Detroit superhighway at night. Vintage Weigh & Pay

Forget the High Street for your January shopping bargains, The Vintage Weigh & Pay is coming to The Boiler Shop for a big Vintage Sale.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Grab a bag on entry for your finds. Our vintage wholesaler will be bringing 6 tonnes of vintage clothing from the 1960s onwards. Our clothing will be hung out on rails and in rummage bins for you to pick through. You can try anything before you buy.

WEIGHING & PAYING
You can check how much you’re spending at any point by going over to our ‘WEIGH STATION’. When you’re happy head to our ‘PAY STATION’ where you’ll be given a final price and your haul will be bagged & tagged.

WHATS ON SALE?
Unlike other vintage sale events our quality grade is high and our stock is widely varied. We'll be bringing a great mixture of Mens & Womens clothing & accessories. There’s literally tonnes to choose from. New stock goes out every hour so can keep popping in and out all day to see new stock!

WHAT CAN YOU GET FOR 1KG/£15?
There’s no minimum or maximum spend at our events so you can pick as little or as much as you want. Check out these examples here.

EARLY BIRD ENTRY
We hold a special early bird hour for eager shoppers to get in early. This starts 1 hour before general admission and costs £3. Just turn up to take part!

Smoove and Turrell's End of Year party

Smoove & Turrell have been spreading their unique blend of vintage soul non-stop throughout the UK this year. The boys kicked off the Crown Posada tour at the Wylam Brewery, selling out the 800 capacity venue. Now, they're back to do it again at the Boiler Shop, returning to their hometown for an end of year Christmas Party on the 18th of December, bringing along some of their favorite DJs.

'We’re excited to share these amazing DJs at our end of year PARTY'

'The Allergies' Comprising of 'DJ Moneyshot' and 'DJ Rackabeat', the Bristolian duo are on a mission to reshape vintage sounds for the modern dance floor. Since forming in 2012 and prior to signing to Jalapeno Records, The Allergies have racked up two EPs, a handful of remixes. Their killer tune Heartbreaker was picked as Tune of the Month in Mixmag and up-tempo stomper As We Do Our Thing has being championed on radio by Craig Charles on BBC 6 Music.

Local lads 'Deja Brew' stick to the foundation of music, playing the best in jazz, funk, Latin, soul, disco and afro-beat.

Guilty Pleasures: Halloween Party

29 October / Doors: 9pm / Curfew: 3am

On Saturday 29 October when the sun goes down, a huddle of witches, vampires, warlocks, ghouls, ghosts and goblins will gather for a fearsome frolic under the giant full moon (disco ball) for the Guilty Pleasures Halloween Party...

Guilty Pleasures is a night like no other. Immersive and unashamedly unapologetic it celebrates and enjoys all things pop, with energetic DJ sets; live music from Massaoke  – a crowd karaoke sing-a-long; a Guilty Pleasures’ confession booth; and The LipSinkers - the world famous drag queen dance troupe.

It’s a night where you can enjoy all of the songs you secretly love, where the spirit of Umbrella-era Rihanna downs shots with Whitney Houston, while Taylor Swift doesn’t stop moving to the funky funky beat with S Club 7 and Katy Perry loses her shit over the fact that Backstreet is back, alright?

Halloween fancy dress is very encouraged, the more gruesome the better, & we’re offering up £100 cash prize for the best costume.
